Comprehensive Nutritional and Dietary Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorder—A Randomized, Controlled 12-Month Trial

James Adams, et al

This study involved a randomized, controlled, single-blind 12-month treatment study of a comprehensive nutritional and dietary intervention. Participants were 67 children and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) ages 3–58 years from Arizona and 50 non-sibling neurotypical controls of similar age and gender. Treatment began with a special vitamin/mineral supplement, and additional treatments were added sequentially, including essential fatty acids, Epsom salt baths, carnitine, digestive enzymes, and a healthy gluten-free, casein-free, soy-free (HGCSF) diet. There was a significant improvement in nonverbal intellectual ability in the treatment group compared to the non-treatment group (+6.7 ± 11 IQ points vs. −0.6 ± 11 IQ points, p = 0.009) based on a blinded clinical assessment. Based on semi-blinded assessment, the treatment group, compared to the non-treatment group, had significantly greater improvement in autism symptoms and developmental age. The treatment group had significantly greater increases in EPA, DHA, carnitine, and vitamins A, B2, B5, B6, B12, folic acid, and Coenzyme Q10. The positive results of this study suggest that a comprehensive nutritional and dietary intervention is effective at improving nutritional status, non-verbal IQ, autism symptoms, and other symptoms in most individuals with ASD. Parents reported that the vitamin/mineral supplements, essential fatty acids, and HGCSF diet were the most beneficial.

Effect of a vitamin/mineral supplement on children and adults with autism

Adams, JB, et all

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Vitamin/mineral supplements are among the most commonly used treatments for autism, but the research on their use for treating autism has been limited.

METHOD:

This study is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled three month vitamin/mineral treatment study. The study involved 141 children and adults with autism, and pre and post symptoms of autism were assessed. None of the participants had taken a vitamin/mineral supplement in the two months prior to the start of the study. For a subset of the participants (53 children ages 5-16) pre and post measurements of nutritional and metabolic status were also conducted.

RESULTS:

The vitamin/mineral supplement was generally well-tolerated, and individually titrated to optimum benefit. Levels of many vitamins, minerals, and biomarkers improved/increased showing good compliance and absorption. Statistically significant improvements in metabolic status were many including: total sulfate (+17%, p = 0.001), S-adenosylmethionine (SAM; +6%, p = 0.003), reduced glutathione (+17%, p = 0.0008), ratio of oxidized glutathione to reduced glutathione (GSSG:GSH; -27%, p = 0.002), nitrotyrosine (-29%, p = 0.004), ATP (+25%, p = 0.000001), NADH (+28%, p = 0.0002), and NADPH (+30%, p = 0.001). Most of these metabolic biomarkers improved to normal or near-normal levels. The supplement group had significantly greater improvements than the placebo group on the Parental Global Impressions-Revised (PGI-R, Average Change, p = 0.008), and on the subscores for Hyperactivity (p = 0.003), Tantrumming (p = 0.009), Overall (p = 0.02), and Receptive Language (p = 0.03). For the other three assessment tools the difference between treatment group and placebo group was not statistically significant. Regression analysis revealed that the degree of improvement on the Average Change of the PGI-R was strongly associated with several biomarkers (adj. R2 = 0.61, p < 0.0005) with the initial levels of biotin and vitamin K being the most significant (p < 0.05); both biotin and vitamin K are made by beneficial intestinal flora.

CONCLUSIONS:

Oral vitamin/mineral supplementation is beneficial in improving the nutritional and metabolic status of children with autism, including improvements in methylation, glutathione, oxidative stress, sulfation, ATP, NADH, and NADPH. The supplement group had significantly greater improvements than did the placebo group on the PGI-R Average Change. This suggests that a vitamin/mineral supplement is a reasonable adjunct therapy to consider for most children and adults with autism.

Vitamin/Mineral Supplements for Children and Adults with Autism

James B Adams*

Abstract Vitamins and minerals are the most widely used medical treatment for autism. Many research studies have demonstrated that children and adults with autism often have nutritional and metabolic problems, including problems with methylation, glutathione, oxidative stress, sulfation, lithium, and more. This review summarizes the results of several vitamin/mineral treatment studies conducted by our group, which demonstrate that vitamin/mineral supplements are highly effective in improving many nutritional and metabolic problems, and result in significant improvements in symptoms based on a large, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. We recommend that all children and adults with autism consider a 2-3 month trial of a vitamin/mineral supplement designed for individuals with autism that is similar to the one used in our studies. By starting at a low dose, and gradually increasing it, there is minimal risk of adverse effects, and many children and adults are likely to benefit, sometimes substantially.

HOW NUTRITIONAL STATUS, DIET AND DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS CAN AFFECT AUTISM. A REVIEW

Kawicka A1, Regulska-Ilow B.

Abstract

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder with symptoms arising that are apparent throughout the patient's lifespan. Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are characterised by impaired social and communication interactions as well as restricted, repetitive interests and behaviour. Currently in Poland, about 50 000 people suffer from autism, of which 1/5 are children. Epidemiological studies show that the incidence of autism is increasing, which may be due to the diagnostic category of ASD having been developed. Of vital importance in the treatment of autism, is early diagnosis which is conducive to more rapidly improving the quality of patients' health. It is believed that both genetic and environmental factors may affect the development of the disease. Moreover, expert opinion emphasises the importance of making an adequate diagnosis when the first symptoms of autism start appearing which can be both psychological, gastro-intestinal and metabolic ones. Conventional treatment is based on the combination of behavioural and dietary therapy together with pharmacotherapy. For example, adapting an appropriate diet could help alleviate the disease severity, as well as the psychological and gastrointestinal symptoms. Much scientific research has indicated that pathogenesis of autism may have a beginning already in foetal life. During pregnancy, specialists should take special heed of metabolic disorders, which can increase the risk of ASD in children. One of the dietician's tasks are to properly assess the nutritional status of mothers before and during pregnancy, thereby allowing changes in nutrition to be made wherever necessary in order that metabolic indicators be improved. Thus an important part of autism therapy is the improving patient's nutritional status to prevent the onset of gastrointestinal symptoms. Adopting diets and tailored to individual disease symptoms, is linked to the nutritional requirements and food preferences of the patient. Specialists also emphasise that continual monitoring of the diet and nutritional status of children with ASD is required. It is also essential to start adequate dietary management in autistic patients with overweight, obesity or wasting, caused by improper nutrition. Frequently only a dietary therapy is insufficient to effectively treat autism. Many studies demonstrate the need to supplement the nutritional deficiencies of autistic patients with fatty acids omega-3, probiotics, vitamins and minerals in combination with medical and psychological interventions. A properly designed elimination diet adapted to the patient's individual may also lead to relief of the autism symptoms and the occurrence of gastrointestinal disorders. Parents and caregivers should therefore be aware of the benefits of nutritional therapy and need for proper monitoring the treatment of patients with ASD. A review of nutritional factors, dietary treatments and diet supplementation in patients with ASD is presented.

Nutritional and metabolic status of children with autism vs. neurotypical children, and the association with autism severity.

Adams, JB, et all

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

The relationship between relative metabolic disturbances and developmental disorders is an emerging research focus. This study compares the nutritional and metabolic status of children with autism with that of neurotypical children and investigates the possible association of autism severity with biomarkers.

METHOD:

Participants were children ages 5-16 years in Arizona with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (n = 55) compared with non-sibling, neurotypical controls (n = 44) of similar age, gender and geographical distribution. Neither group had taken any vitamin/mineral supplements in the two months prior to sample collection. Autism severity was assessed using the Pervasive Development Disorder Behavior Inventory (PDD-BI), Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC), and Severity of Autism Scale (SAS). Study measurements included: vitamins, biomarkers of vitamin status, minerals, plasma amino acids, plasma glutathione, and biomarkers of oxidative stress, methylation, sulfation and energy production.

RESULTS:

Biomarkers of children with autism compared to those of controls using a t-test or Wilcoxon test found the following statistically significant differences (p < 0.001): Low levels of biotin, plasma glutathione, RBC SAM, plasma uridine, plasma ATP, RBC NADH, RBC NADPH, plasma sulfate (free and total), and plasma tryptophan; also high levels of oxidative stress markers and plasma glutamate. Levels of biomarkers for the neurotypical controls were in good agreement with accessed published reference ranges. In the Autism group, mean levels of vitamins, minerals, and most amino acids commonly measured in clinical care were within published reference ranges. A stepwise, multiple linear regression analysis demonstrated significant associations between several groups of biomarkers with all three autism severity scales, including vitamins (adjusted R2 of 0.25-0.57), minerals (adj. R2 of 0.22-0.38), and plasma amino acids (adj. R2 of 0.22-0.39).

CONCLUSION:

The autism group had many statistically significant differences in their nutritional and metabolic status, including biomarkers indicative of vitamin insufficiency, increased oxidative stress, reduced capacity for energy transport, sulfation and detoxification. Several of the biomarker groups were significantly associated with variations in the severity of autism. These nutritional and metabolic differences are generally in agreement with other published results and are likely amenable to nutritional supplementation. Research investigating treatment and its relationship to the co-morbidities and etiology of autism is warranted.

Worth it!

My son is non verbal in his communication so I have been taking these vitamin capsules as well just to see if any side effects. How I give to my son to avoid any issues: Take with a full meal like lunch or dinner if with breakfast make sure it's a harty meal NOT just fruit or cereal. I use a liquid medicine syringe, open capsule and dump powder into the syringe insert plug with mouth facing up so powder isn't squirted out then I take his juice cup and draw up some apple juice into the syringe hold finger over mouth piece and shake till dissolved remove air bubble then give to him like any other liquid medicine then give him his juice cup to drink right after to avoid after tast. This way I know he got the perfect dose and don't have to worry about him drinking it in a full cup of juice and waisting it because of taste. But these are amazing for him and myself we both sleep better and have a better mood it's definitely worth it. If your child won't drink because of after taste try it this way hopefully this helps other super families love yall. And parents I'm telling you you can also take these vitamins try it. You can get liquid medicine syringe for kiddos at the local pharmacy from the pharmacist.💜

The vitamins are very good. I’ve seen so much improvement in my grandson. I referred the vitamins to at least six people, and I know that they ordered the vitamins for their child.

Calm & Focus review

Since introducing Calm & Focus into our routine, we've observed remarkable changes in our son, who has ADHD. After just two weeks, he became noticeably calmer, more balanced, and more engaged in our conversations. This supplement has been a game-changer for our toddler, and we've made it a consistent part of his daily regimen. We wholeheartedly recommend other parents to try it and witness the positive transformations firsthand.

Unpaid Review

I’ve had my kid taking this particular fish oil because it was the highest concentrated versus the others in the market. I’m really big on reading labels and focusing on product concentrations for quality. My kid has been taking this fish oil since he was about 3yrs old (level 3 ASD severe). He is now 5 (level 2 ASD moderate). He was attending ABA when we started and the therapists there had noticed changes. The other parents had asked me what I was doing and I would always refer this website. I am still purchasing this fish oil and I will continue. I will also add the D3 because kids are germy and we need strong immune systems while in kindergarten. The concentration is higher with MSH’s D3 than others from the natural herb store that I previously purchased. I am a person of numbers and results even considering the negative results for the overall benefit. The quality is worth its price and I alone- approve this message.

I'm seeing results!

I have been giving this probiotic supplement to my boy and it seems to really be helping with his speech. He has been putting words into 5/6 seven word sentences on his own, instead of using echolalia. I will continue using this for sure!

Great product

My son who is autistic has come a long way from using these products. So happy that i decided to take a step forward for his well-being. I share about these products to other parents and they have been impressed with their kid’s challenges and changes that occur each day from being nonverbal and now verbal. My son’s behavior has calm down from him having meltdowns. Thank you!

Super Magnesium Capsules

I bought the magnesium capsules for my son who has autism. He was on magnesium glycinate but it was making him very tired and weepy. These super mag capsules work much better for him. I open the capsule and mix it into his a2 milk. I started taking these too. It really helps with anxiety.

Definitely Helps

My 2 year old son has had issues with constipation and nothing helped until this probiotic powder.

Loving this stuff!

My daughter drinks this every morning in her juice and she has recently become more focused and talkative! She is also a picky eater so giving her this makes me feel better that she is still getting all the vitamins and minerals she needs. 10 stars!!!

Amazing Product

We are only on week 4 of starting the multivitamin mineral plus with our 4 1/2 year old and have seen dramatic improvement not only in his behavior but equally his speaking.
Before starting this supplement our son wasn’t even speaking in short sentences and he couldn’t or wouldn’t answer basic questions. Additionally, his behavior most days was aggressive for no reason even to our pets (our family eats pretty clean but he’s a very picky eater). We had avoided taking him out much because he would act out to others or wreck something for no reason other than being sensory overloaded.
In the last 2 weeks for consecutive days it is literally like multiple “lights” have come on and shifts have happened in his little brain.
I was not expecting to see a change this quickly. A reasonable expectation is at least 4 plus weeks. Not only have my husband and I seen it but we have had multiple friends comment that “something is different.” Last week was also the first time he stayed in his children’s class at church with me getting a call. Needless to say, we are sold and immensely grateful for this product and the Calm & Focus.

We love them!!

Since starting the MySpectrumHeros multivitamin with my 5.5 year old son he’s sleeping better, happier, hasn’t been sick as often, and seems to be even focusing better in school!!

Thank you so much for making these!!!

Definitely helped!

My two year old was struggling with hard stool and constipation for a while, but he has had soft/normal poop every day while taking this product!!! The only time he’s had a hard poop again has been the day he didn’t take the supplement. I’d recommend starting out at a super small dose and working upward to the recommended dose, because the first morning I gave it to my son, he fell asleep at 10am which never happens. The strawberry taste is pleasant. My son is an extremely picky eater and drinker, but I mix this with water and put it in his fruit smoothies and he loves it. It’s sensitive on the stomach and well-tolerated.

Optimistic

I was skeptical to try this with the reviews about the taste as my son is super picky and an always spot when I add things to his liquid or food. It mixed perfectly with a 1/4 cup warm water and then I added his flavor packet and cold water to his sippy cup. He drank it right down. Now it smells awful but I even didn't noticed a taste. We just started 2 days ago because he has slowed down on his normal eating and I also would hope it will help him with the agitation he has started at bedtime.

It really works!!!

My son has ADHD and I certainly didn’t want to put him on any medication related to his ADHD. I accidentally stumbled upon this website whilst looking for alternatives. He has been on focus and calm for almost 5 years and it’s the holy grail, to stay calm, focused and handling his emotions. It has helped to stay focused during class work.
Be patient and believe in your child and it will definitely work.

Game changer

We use in combination with the Calm & Focus and the Multimineral Vitamin. Helps with sleep, calm and his memory. Great for calcium and strengthening his immune system!

Owsum product

I am using this product for two month and its results are miraculous

Game changer!

I feel so much better knowing my son is getting the vitamins and minerals he needs AND that it’s available in capsule form. My son refused the powder because he could taste the flavour and sense the texture. So thankful for this product.

Super Mag!

Great supplement all around! We added this to our grandson’s vitamin regimen for help with focus and concentration during school… seems to be helping!

We love the flexibility!

We love the flexibility of the capsules for my 6 year old son who takes them. He knows how to swallow pills but doesn’t always want to. With the capsule, he can choose each day how he wants to take it. He can either swallow the pill, or we’ll open it up and pour it into yogurt or a smoothie. It’s been helping with his tummy pain!

Great multivitamin

I give my son the multivitamin mineral plus twice a day and it really helps to calm him. It mixes pretty well in his juice. I add a tiny bit of room temperature water to his cold grape juice because I find the powder mixes a lot better. This vitamin actually calms him down a lot to the point where I know my son must be missing important minerals due to his autism and gi problems. I will continue to use this product because it woks. Thank you all at my spectrum hero’s for providing great products especially in powder and liquid forms 😊

Amazing results

We started this to help heal my daughter’s gut. She was having difficulty going regularly. After about a month of regularly taking this, she started going to the bathroom more frequently. It has made a tremendous difference in her overall mood. I would definitely recommend this product
